South Africa's national lottery started in 2000 and is regulated by the National Lotteries Board. It was run by Uthingo until March 2007, when it lost its license renewal bid. The lottery was suspended from March of that year, until the license was transferred to the Gidani consortium in October 2007. The lottery allocates its profits to charitable, cultural and recreational causes as well as sports through the National Lottery Distribution Trust (NLDTF).
